Artist Statement
My body of work serves as a narrative vessel, portraying the myriad emotions that accompany the feeling of growing up: the loneliness and confusion of leaving behind the familiar, contrasted against the joy and playfulness of cherished memories.
Utilizing thin layers of paint on stretched canvas, I breathe life into these memories. When working with childhood photographs, I purposefully manipulate composition, color, and background to evoke a realistic yet emotionally resonant portrayal of the image. This manipulation serves to bridge the gap between the past and present, allowing the viewer to access a deeper emotional narrative while maintaining accuracy. In instances where photographs are absent, I engage in the arrangement of objects and toys in a still-life manner, painting them directly from life to imbue the work with authenticity.
A significant inspiration for my practice derives from the uninhibited creativity of children's drawings. The child-like mark-making introduces an element of playfulness and spontaneity to my work, providing an intriguing contrast to the otherwise realistic imagery, creating a dialogue that speaks to the complex interplay of past and present. This contrast invites a deeper examination of how we, as adults, often navigate the world through a lens shaped by our earliest years.
